Atlanta Magazine Articles
Our Creative Writing Program has gotten a nice ride in the current Arts and Letters edition of Atlanta magazine (September 2023).
The lively issue features a thoughtful interview with Creative Writing professor Tayari Jones. Titled “The Great American Novelist,” the interview by Regina N. Bradley explores a range of influences in Prof. Jones’s life as a writer, including the Atlanta Child Murders, Spelman College (“the greatest gift”) and her professional “genealogy” as a southern black woman writer.
In the same issue, Creative Writing major Oli Turner’s story about the latest iteration of Underground Atlanta – as a DIY arts destination – has a six-page spread that showcases her thorough on-the-scene reporting and animated writing. Oli, a junior, wrote the article in Prof. Hank Klibanoff’s long-form narrative nonfiction class in Spring 2023, then worked with a magazine editor through revisions for their audience. (A year ago, the same magazine published a piece by another Emory student from Prof. Klibanoff’s class, Anna Kottakis, who graduated last Spring. AK, as she is known, wrote about the popularity of indoor rock-climbing in Atlanta with a special focus on disabled climbers.)
