Class Application

All Creative Writing courses in Fall and Spring are permission-only and require an application. Summer courses and First Year Seminars do not require an application. Do not email instructors for permission.

  1. Read course descriptions

Please read the Creative Writing Program website's Course Atlas descriptions before applying. The atlas includes details about required writing samples, pre-requisites, and other information you need to know before choosing a class.

The University Course Atlas and OPUS do not contain the complete atlas information.

  2. Download the application

  3. Submit application

Applications should be submitted as an email attachment to nora.lewis@emory.edu in Word format.

    • If you are required to submit a writing sample, include it with your application and send as ONE Word document.
    • The email subject line should include "application" – failure to use this keyword may result in a delayed response.
    Deadlines

There is no deadline for Introduction classes. Applications will be accepted until the requested class is full or closed. Applications will not be accepted after the first class session.

The priority deadline for Spring 2025 Intermediate and Advanced applications is October 23; the hard deadline is November 22 (exceptions only for later schedule changes and Oxford continuees). Late applications have a reduced chance of workshop acceptance. Students can expect to receive acceptance decisions starting November 11.

If Nora Lewis does not have your application before the end of the business day on October 23, your application will not be sent to instructors until after November 22. If there is an issue with your application that is not resolved by October 23, your application will not be sent until after November 22, so please review your form, be sure to include all class details and writing samples, and send your document according to instructions.

  4. Acceptance or waitlist

You will be notified by email of your acceptance into the class.

    • If you are accepted, your seat will be reserved, and you will receive a permission number to use when registering.
    • If you are placed on our internal waitlist, you will not see this status in OPUS.

PLEASE NOTE: You will receive an email from Nora Lewis when your application is processed. Applications are processed on certain days and in the order they are received. Please refrain from sending multiple emails to inquire about the status of your application – you will be notified as soon as possible.
